Dodge Caravan

 Model of the car:Dodge Caravan
General comments:OK.........I am back. My trans failed due to the clutch that changes gear. I did notice that it would change gears back to first but when I would shut the van off, while in neutral, and turn it back on the gears would go into place and then it would be ok. This started back in March of 2003. I let it go thinking it will be OK when I should have taken it in to be checked. The garage where I took it told me that they could have probably replaced the clutch. The clutch broke off and ripped the trans gears apart. I was still able to drive it forward but with heavy jerking of van as if the emergency brake was on. I DO NOT have the 4 peed transmission with "Over Drive" that many ppl are having problems with and it's the 4 speed with "Over Drive" that is giving the most problems with breaking down. The garage is only charging me $580 to replace the who transmission, including labor cost. The trans they are putting in is from another junker but the trans in that van is in good condition and only has about 80,000 miles on it. They tell me the trans should get another 70-80,000 miles or more. They told me that because the trans is coming off a junker that they can only gaurantee it for 30 days like any used parts you buy. I will see how long this trans will last and you can be sure that I will have it checked out if the gears slip in any way. I feel I could have avoided this problem completly if I had taken it in to be checked back in March. The clutch could have been replaced at a much lower cost 4 sure but waiting as long as I did and having the clutch brake off and damaging my gears. I am part of the blame and then again I may be totally blamed for my waiting. Oh by the way, the transmission that is in my van right now has 128,000 miles on it. So, you can be the judge and decide if the Dodge Caravan is good or not. At least stay away from the 4 speed with "Over Drive". That's the one that has the biggest complaints on.
